Our Mission
Bring Æthelstan Back to Kingston
The King Æthelstan Project merges art, history, and cutting-edge technology to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of King Æthelstan’s coronation in Kingston upon Thames. As the first ruler of a unified England, Æthelstan’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of Kingston, where he was crowned in 925.
Led by Kingston University—situated just half a mile from the historic coronation site at Kingston Market—this project seeks to bring Æthelstan’s story to life through an innovative mixed reality experience. At its heart is a masterful sculpture by renowned artist Andrew Sinclair, which we are unveiling in virtual space using VR and AR technologies.
By blending artistic excellence with immersive digital storytelling, we provide a unique way to explore Kingston’s rich Saxon heritage. Unlike traditional exhibitions, this project allows audiences to engage directly with history, making the past tangible and interactive. With a strong focus on local pride and community involvement, we aim to highlight Kingston’s significance as the birthplace of England’s first king and a key site in the nation’s formation.
Through this pioneering initiative, we are not only preserving Æthelstan’s legacy but also reaffirming Kingston’s place at the heart of English history—ensuring that, 1100 years after his coronation, the story of England’s first king continues to inspire and captivate.
